Across the country Americans are demonstrating in protest of our nation’s devastating history of of racial injustice, white supremacy and the systemic violence of law enforcement onto Black people. The shows will go on, but not this week. Many times when comedians perform we often must suppress whatever pain, trauma, anxieties, etc. we are experiencing to do our job and make audiences laugh away their own demons. This week it is especially important to acknowledge the specific historical and present trauma inflicted onto our Black colleagues in comedy, and the impact it has when we unconsciously perpetuate it. This is far from over, which means there is so much opportunity to evolve.
